In 1997 the Chiquita Canyon Landfill expansion was granted and an agreement was made between Newhall Land and Farming Company, who own the land the landfill resides on, the Chiquita Canyon Landfill then run by Laidlaw Waste Systems (Chiquita), INC. and the Val Verde Civic Association. This agreement was written to protect the residents of Val Verde and agree upon terms of the expansion including annual fund distribution to a funding committee to be used toward community improvements and programs. There as also a agreement to the landfill closing:
The maximum total capacity of the landfill shall be 23 million tons. Landfill closure shall occur when this capacity is reached, or November 24, 2019, whichever occurs first.
Many residents of Val Verde have been made aware of this closing date when purchasing property and or used this information as a factor in their decision making in regards to the landfill and living in the vicinity of it.
