Get your voice heard! Demand a public hearing before it’s too late!

Our group visited the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in January to plea for another public hearing while the Chiquita Canyon Landfill is still in its DRAFT Environmental Impact Report phase.

The request is made due to the absence of any commissioner at the July 31, 2014 public hearing on the DEIR which took place in Castaic, CA. Nearly one hundred community members who attended the July hearing provided testimonials recounting health issues and suffering due to the landfill gasses and odors produced by the Chiquita Canyon Landfill at its current size and spoke out against an expansion.

They voiced skepticism toward the process created to protect them from these violations on their health, the health of their families and their right to enjoy their homes, schools, places of worship, and workplaces free of trespassing odors and gasses.

Many also shared anger toward the blatant disregard of the agreement made during the last Chiquita Canyon Landfill expansion banning any more in the future. This agreement was made between the Landfill operators, the landowners where the landfill resides, and the people of Val Verde via the Val Verde Civic Association.  In this contract, all parties agreed there would not be another expansion of the landfill and it would close once it reached “23 million tons or November 24, 2019 whichever occurs first.”

Re: Hearing on Chiquita Canyon Landfill Expansion Draft EIR before the full Regional Planning Commission. Please copy to all Supervisors.

Dear Supervisor Antonovich:

It is my understanding that residents of the Val Verde area and the Santa Clarita Valley requested a hearing on the Draft EIR for this harmful project on January 6th, but no one has received a reply from your office. This expansion will add over 10,000 trucks per day to our already crowded roads, additional air pollution to our Valley which is already defined by the EPA as having extremely hazardous air pollution and add green house gases that create climate change.

I am writing today to ask you again for a hearing on the Draft EIR before the full Regional Planning Commission. There are many issues that should be addressed before this project reaches the final stage. It is important for the Commissioners to hear about past landfill violations, health issues and the failure to abide by the contract made with the community to close the landfill.  A hearing before the full Commission would allow the Commissioners to hear, understand and address these issues.

Sincerely,
